In the world there are diets of plenty and diets of hunger. For example in the developed world there is enough food grown for the people and the rest of the food is imported which can easily be paid for.

In many parts of the developing world, the amount of food grown is inadequate and there is less ability to trade and buy food at market prices. Often a lot of the food grown is used for export.

In order to maintain a satisfactory diet, the diet must contain different types of food in order to build and maintain the body and to regulate its various functions and to provide energy for work and leisure activities.

A satisfactory diet needs to include the principal food types:



Proteins
Carbohydrates

For each type of person this balanced diet can be different. It depends on one's age, gender, and type of work one does.

In most developed countries people have a balanced diet. Developed countries indicate what is the Required Daily Allowance (RDA) in order to maintain a balanced diet.

In many developing countries people do not get the required daily allowance. This lack of proper nutrition often leads to less energy to do work; it can lead to weakened resistance to diseases. It can lead to a feeling of apathy and it can also cause diseases.

On the average, 2,300 calories are needed daily for a healthy life, but a large part of the world's inhabitants do not reach these levels. This occurs in 25% of the population in the developing world while only 3% in the developed world.
