Sport is also a service which is also influenced by certain geographical factors.

We can say that a certain sport or leisure service as well as a sports venue has a specific sphere of influence and catchment area. We can ask ourselves from where do people come from. How are far are they willing to travel for this specific sports service or venue? We can look at the range of this service or venue. What is the maximum distance people are willing to travel in order to obtain this service or willingness to travel to this venue? We can also look at the threshold population. How many people does this service need in order for it to function? A sports center may need a small or limited threshold population in order for it operate. An important sporting event such as the Olympics would need a very large threshold population in order for it to be profitable.

Case Study: 2008 Beijing Olympics
The Beijing Olympic games had enormous sphere of influence and catchment area. China has the largest population in the world and potentially a very profitable market. Beijing is also located in the region of East Asia with a huge threshold population; Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam are countries within accessible reach to the Beijing Olympics. Even with a relatively small range, a large number of people would opt to watch the games.
